I’ve been fortunate to cruise the Inside Passage on a small ship the past two summers. It’s always very beautiful and brings some wonderful wildlife encounters. As a part of our cruises we were able to stop at locations where we could enjoy both coastal brown bears and black bears. The bears were busy catching salmon and in some areas enjoying the early summer sedge grasses. Sows with spring and yearling cubs came to the streams. Fascinating creatures who can squeeze out the salmon roe and filet a salmon as efficiently as the staff at my local fish market. The availability of salmon also attracts eagles who catch their own, but also take advantage of what the bears leave behind.
