I have arranged a charter of a very comfortable, ice class expedition ship for a group of up to 12 people. The cruise dates are September 8-17, 2026. It was a marvelous experience which these images can only begin to describe. The scenery was magnificent, and the encounters with whales, eagles, and bears created wonderful opportunities for photography. Lago Carrera is fed by rivers flowing from the glacial ice melting in the Andes high above the lake. It has a stunning blue color that changes with different sun angles, but is always beautiful. The caves began to form more than 6,000 years ago, created by the effects of water and wind eroding the stone and natural marble in some of the rocky shores  of the lake. […]
- [Namibia - Wildlife](https://eliotcohen.com/namibia-wildlife/): > Africa The best known location for Namibian wildlife is Etosha, a large reserve in the north. There is a surprisingly diverse group of creatures given the desert character of the park. Elephants are particularly plentiful here. We were treated to large families coming to drink and bathe at one of the water holes. On a subsequent visit we were closer to the Skeleton Coast in the Hoanib Valley where there were also groups of elephants in a slightly more mountain setting. - [Namibia - Desert Places](https://eliotcohen.com/namibia-desert-places/): > Africa There is quite a bit to experience in Namibia. Much is desert and very dry, but quite beautiful and unique. The Atlantic coast near Swakopmund has a vast flowing dune field. It gets more land rover traffic than Sossusvlei, but the dunes are magnificent nonetheless. Driving north, the unusual rocky landscape of Damaraland is somewhat otherworldly, and fascinating geologically.  The local Himba people still live authentically here and in other regions in Namibia. In the southwest, the early San tribesmen made quivers for their arrows from the trees growing within the rocky terrain, hence the name, quiver trees. […]
- [Namibia - Sossusvlei](https://eliotcohen.com/namibia-sossusvlei/): > Africa Namibia is well known for the amazing high dunes in the Sossusvlei area. Rising typically 600 feet high — and up to 1000 feet — they are the among the highest dunes in the world.  Iron oxide and colored quartz combine to make these dunes a vivid orange, which glows in early or late light. In one small area, Dead Vlei, ancient camel thorn trees, left dry when the river that nourished them gradually changed course, create a fascinating dance against the dune walls that surround them. - [Alaska Inside Passage - Whales](https://eliotcohen.com/alaska-inside-passage-whales/): > Alaska In the summer humpback whales (and Orcas) come to the waters around Alaska taking advantage of the rich feeding opportunities. They are wonderful to observe and photograph and make quite an impact if they pass close to or under the ship. Breaching can be observed, and at times we see have seen groups of humpbacks coming together to feed using a technique known as bubble net feeding or cooperative feeding.

Additionally there are turquoise glacial fed lakes and rivers, and abundant wildlife, including guanaco, fox, and puma. My visits have been in the late (Patagonian) fall, timed for the peak foliage for the lenga and nirre trees. Snowcapped mountains form a beautiful background to the colorful foliage. The first might be the Capela do Senhor da Padra, a small chapel built on an outcrop of rocks on Praia Miramar. It is the location of many points of historic interest dating back to the Roman era and later to the Moors. Its high vantage point and rainforest climate add considerable scenic interest. - [Portugal - Douro River Valley](https://eliotcohen.com/portugal-douro-river-valley/): > Portugal The Douro River begins in Spain and flows to the ocean through Porto, but is perhaps best known for its connection to the port wine region of Northern Portugal. Terraced vineyards line the hillsides where the grapes are grown. The wine was taken by flat bottom boat down the river to cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, across from the river from Porto. The cellars are still there offering tastings and bottles of port, but the river is used more for tourist activities than the transport of wine. - [Portugal-Algarve](https://eliotcohen.com/portugal-algarve/): > Portugal The Algarve includes the beautiful southern coast with marvelous beaches and caves carved by the ocean from the soft limestone. Views from the cliffs and from the water level (sometimes requiring a boat) are quite dramatic. The towns are interesting as well with lots of whitewashed structures and traditional decorative  colors. I’m stretching the Algarve region a bit by including Sines which is part of the Alentejo region, but as a seaside town it’s historic area has a similar feel to locations in the Algarve.

- [Alaska-Mat-Su Valley](https://eliotcohen.com/alaska-mat-su-valley/): > Alaska The Mat-Su Valley refers to an area northeast of Anchorage and south of the Alaska Range of mountains. However it includes the northern section of the Chugach Mountains which are rugged and dramatic. It also has a large concentration of aspen forests which are beautiful in the fall. The Matanuska River flowing from the Matanuska Glacier is the centerpiece, but there are interesting sites throughout including the Independence Mine, near Hatcher Pass, one of the last gold mines to operate commercially in the US.

It’s surrounded by mountains on three sides (other than towards Anchorage) and has a strong tidal flow.  Further south, in Seward, it’s possible to cruise the coastline of Resurrection Bay, observe marine mammals, and some of the glaciers that outlet into it. - [Alaska-Denali](https://eliotcohen.com/alaska-denali/): > Alaska Fall in Denali is all about the colorful taiga at lower elevations and the sub alpine tundra as you gain elevation. Both are dense with vibrant red, orange, and some yellow foliage, as well as dwarf spruce that characterize the taiga forest. It stretches endlessly in the valleys and up the mountainsides. It’s quite spectacular. On my visits I have been fortunate that “the mountain” (Denali) was out over several days despite considerable clouds and light rain – a reward for patience and persistence perhaps.

Sunset and sunrise merge together to provide and extended period of beautiful light and color. It’s an awesome time to be on the water among the icebergs. It’s also mighty cold, but the euphoria of these scenes creates a sense of warmth that transcends the frigid temps.

- [Great Sand Dunes National Park](https://eliotcohen.com/great-sand-dunes-national-park/): Located in southeastern Colorado, Great Sand Dunes seems oddly out of place. Rising 750 feet above the San Luis Valley, some of the tallest dunes in the US are here at the base of the Sangre de Christo mountains. There is a natural replenishment of sand for the dunes as rains and snow melt bring fine sediment down to the valley. Then the prevailing winds dry it out and spread it back over the dunes. - [Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon North Rim](https://eliotcohen.com/bryce-canyon-and-the-grand-canyon-north-rim/): > Southwestern United States Bryce Canyon National Park and the Grand Canyon’s North Rim (along with Zion National Park) are relatively close to each other. Bryce is known for it’s formations of eroded sandstone called hoodoos and the large amphitheaters that frame them. The orange to reddish colors are quite vivid. And the sandstone can seem almost translucent in the right light. The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is less visited than the South Rim, but quite dramatic as well. Several areas offer beautiful views ito the canyon.

I think of myself as a landscape photographer, but the places where we live interest me as well. Clear vision, a sense of place, and a sense of craft are what my work is all about. - [France-Lavender in Provence](https://eliotcohen.com/france-lavender-in-provence/): > France Provence offers many wonderful reasons to visit – scenic beauty, charming villages, delightful food and wine, but perhaps the highlight would be the bountiful fields of lavender (and sunflowers) that are at their peak in late June through mid-July. There are many large commercial growers with fields that seem just about endless. And other farms on a smaller scale. Ochre quarries are also found here adding another color palette to the floral mix.

It is home to a  native breed of horses that are thought to be among the oldest breeds in the world. As foals they are black or brown, but gradually their coat turns white. They live naturally in the marshes, but most are not truly wild, rather they are owned and allowed to roam free. They are managed by horsemen and women known as guardians.

- [Peru-Inca stone](https://eliotcohen.com/peru-inca-stone/): > South America The Sacred Valley in Peru has marvelous physical, social, and cultural settings. Nearly 8,000 feet high in the Andes, Machu Pichu is an extraordinary site. Dating most likely from the mid 15th century, it was abandoned a century later and only “rediscovered” in the early 20th century. Walking among its structures you have to appreciate the skill of the inca stone masons. And from just about any viewpoint, the integration with the mountaintop site is breathtaking. Similarly, Ollaytantambo (Sacred Valley) and Sacsayhuaman (Cusco) are also amazing examples of Inca stone.

To the East there is Siricusa and the island of Ortigia which is it’s historic center. To the south, there is the charming fishing village of Marzamemi and the hill towns Ragusa, Modica, and Noto which were all impacted by a dramatic earthquake in 1693. And to the North, there is Taormina, a very popular city for visitors in the shadow of Mt Etna.

The Jakobshavn Glacier (Sermeq Kujalleq) is the source of the ice and produces about 10% of all the icebergs from the Greenland ice sheet.  It’s estimated that 35 billion tons of ice makes its way through the icefjord each year.  The ice that eventually gets to the sea can be 200 feet high (12-15 stories) or higher. Ilulissat is more than 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle, so in the mid summer the sun may never set.  These photos […]

- [Slot Canyons](https://eliotcohen.com/slot-canyons/): > Southwestern United States The slot canyons near Page, Arizona have been sculpted by water flowing through and eroding the sandstone. The walls echo the flow and depending on the time of day and light, the colors are quite beautiful. I’ve never been as excited about the light beams, always preferring the shapes and colors. Think Georgia O’Keefe in stone. Busloads of people show up making the experience complicated for photographers, but if you can let that go, it can be fun.

The Eastern Plateau is part of the western edge of the Grand Staircase-Escalante, where the landscape rises gradually from the Grand Canyon in the south to Bryce Canyon to the north. The forces of uplift are evident and exciting around every turn.

Traveling the country, I found the people to be welcoming, and very friendly.  Thus, along with the cultural and scenic locations, they are among my favorite subjects.

There are many valleys, each with unique characteristics, and throughout the area, one finds homes that have been carved into the softer stone sections. This is also an area with important early Christian sites. Vast, complex, underground cities and the Goreme Open Air Museum are the highlights. The towns and villages are fascinating as well.
