Zion is a marvelous place with dramatic canyon walls overlooking the canyon floor and the Virgin River which carved the canyon. Another fascinating part of Zion is the Eastern Plateau with layers of cross-bedded Navajo sandstone topped with limestone from ancient seabeds. The Eastern Plateau is part of the western edge of the Grand Staircase-Escalante, where the landscape rises gradually from the Grand Canyon in the south to Bryce Canyon to the north. The forces of uplift are evident and exciting around every turn.
