A short drive from Lisbon to the north is Obidos and to the east, Evora and Arraiolos. Evora has lots of history including Roman ruins. It’s in the heart of the Alentejo region known for it’s food and wine as well as cork. Arraiolos is less known but unique nonetheless for the blue trim around its whitewashed buildings. A fortress sits above it on a hilltop. Obidos, a walled city that was originally a Roman town, has become a tourist destination, but by getting off the main walking street, one can feel some of the earlier character of the town.
