With an Extension to the Cinque Terre
Sept 26-30, 2015
Join Eliot on a fabulous photography excursion to rolling hills and ancient town of Tuscany. As a location famed for it’s atmospheric beauty, dramatic light, and picturesque medieval towns, Tuscany is an ideal location for photography. It offers marvelous vistas, architectural details, and engaging people to photograph.
We will begin in the Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, as scenic as any that one could imagine. Our base for the first 2 days will be the Etruscan town of Sarteano in the southern part of the region. Traveling via our own motor coach we’ll be able to experience the full range of the Tuscan light in many wonderful locations. Our plan will be to use early and late light as much as possible. We’ll also photograph in some of the walled towns, and medieval churches, typically using mid day for our visits. We will also spend two nights near the healing waters of Bagno Vignoni, which is also a perfect base for exploring the northern part of the region.
Our last three days will be in Siena, whose historic center is also a Unesco World Heritage site, and San Gimignano where fourteen of the town original towersstill rise above the walls. We’ll have opportunities to photograph both within and outside the walls of these towns taking in other scenic locations nearby. Accommodations have been arranged for one night in Siena and two nights in San Gimignano.
The workshop is designed for 8-10 people. The small size of the group should help to make this a very special experience. We will be guided by my friend, Dario Pichini, with whom I have traveled in Tuscany. Dario is a professional photographer in Sarteano. He knows the hills and towns, the roads and back roads, as well as anybody in the area. And he’s a delight to travel with. Lucia Norrito of Viaggi Senza Fretta, who has a first hand sense of traveling in Tuscany, has made our travel arrangements. www.viaggisenzafretta.com

The cost of the workshop is $3895 for shared accommodations
(plus $465 single supplement).
Cinque Terre extension:
The Cinque Terre consists of five charming towns on the Italian Riviera in the region known as Liguria. The coast is typically rocky and several of the towns sit on promontories overlooking the Mediterranean. The area is one of Italy’s National Parks and is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. The towns are relatively close together and are connected by hiking trails or trains, which run conveniently and inexpensively between them. We’ll make good use of the trains to go from town to town.
For photographers, there are the charms of the little towns and also some amazing “blue hour” views of several towns: Manarola, Vernazza and perhaps Riomaggiore. We would plan on three nights to give us options in case the weather isn’t ideal one evening.
Cinque Terre can be reached conveniently by train from FCO airport via the central terminal in Rome.
A gallery of mages from Cinque Terre is available at: http://dev.eliotcohen.com/galleries/cinque-terre
The cost of the extension is $1,240 for shared accommodations (plus $215 for single supplement) and includes hotel accommodations and breakfast. Lunch and dinner would be on our own. The trains would be at our own expense. A first-class ticket between Rome and Manarola was roughly $100 earlier this year.
